Since 2014, more than 30,390 men, women and children have died in the Mediterranean Sea trying to cross it on makeshift boats. SOS MEDITERRANEE is a European humanitarian association for rescue at sea, made up of citizens mobilized to search and rescue people in distress at sea. Since the start of operations in February 2016, SOS MEDITERRANEE has rescued more than 40,915 people with the Aquarius and then with the Ocean Viking. One-quarter of them were minors. The association is based in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. She received the 2017 Unesco Houphouët-Boigny Prize for Peace. In 2022, it won the prestigious award of the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMFR) for “outstanding contribution of a team to sea search and rescue operations”. In September 2023, SOS MEDITERRANEE was the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award 2023, considered the “alternative peace prize Nobel Prize”.
